In a few hours we will board the Akademik Sergey Vavilov to start a 12 day cruise around the Antarctic Peninsula, hopefully as far south as Marguerite Bay. Back in my day it was full of ice, but I guess it’s warmed up a bit.

In the meantime, here are a few non-Antarctic penguins from the Valdes Peninsula, Punto Tomba, and Tiera del Fuego. It almost seems worth carrying this ridiculous amount of gear around with me, although I’m still fully intending a complete rethink when we get home. Small is beautiful.

Well, be careful David… On my last trip to Laos, I went with a Ricoh GXR and a few small primes… It was fun, and the lightness of the equipment was very appreciated. But, in the end, I regret not having taken my D700 with my usual assortment of 2-3 small primes, plus the 70-300. I could not really get used to the EVF, and there were times when the Ricoh struggled: low light, moving subjects. I suspect that I will return to my DSLR.

Well yes ... There are always two sides to it. And my new Zuiko 150mm f/2 is sensational, in the right conditions, but it weighs 1.5kg :-(

Penguins, and well picked up too. Now all that gear is coming into its own at last ...
